The connection between hydraulics and politics or republicanism is by no means so clear as to admit of these subjects being all mixed up together in one and the same volume. 145. R, Plates I. III. VI. and VII., is the feed pipe, about 3 inches diameter, through which the requisite supply of water passes to the boilers from the feed pump N. This pump (see Plate VI.) is worked by a plunger20 A inches diameter, having a 2 feet 9 inches stroke, and attached by a rod to the outer arm of the beam. When the plunger rises, water enters from the hot well through the inlet valve w'; in the descending stroke such portion of this as is necessary for the feed is expelled through the outlet valve x, and passes by the pipe R into the boilers; the remainder flowing away through the waste valve y. 146. The quantity of water entering the boilers is regulated by the feed valves m" in the feed pipes, there being one to each boiler. The waste valve being weighted to a pressure exceeding that which obtains in the boilers, the water will always enter the latter in preference to lifting the waste valve, if the valves m" are sufficiently raised to afford it a free passage; but if these are so much closed that the water cannot pass through with sufficient rapidity, the waste valve will be raised, and a portion of the water will escape through it. Thus the quantity fed into either of the boilers can be nicely apportioned to supply the place of that evaporated, by simply raising or lowering the valve m" by the micrometer scre...
